More about Julia

Julia currently works part time for the London Borough of Waltham Forest. In her first year in the post, Julia devised and implemented a new model of support for childminders. Within 9 months of implementation, the number of "Requires Improvement" Ofsted inspections in the borough significantly decreased, and the number of "Outstanding" judgments rose by over 20%.

Prior to this role Julia worked part time for Barnardo's, as part of the senior management team, running Children's Centres in the London Borough of Brent. Primarily she focused on profiling the community and using data to support effective delivery of services. She led on the Back to Work programme for families and was part of a two-person team seconded by Brent in 2014, to help turn around a Children’s Centre at risk of an "Inadequate" Ofsted judgement. Areas of responsibility included: focusing and improving the quality of Early Learning sessions, profiling the local community and setting priorities for delivery, embedding the robust use of data for planning and monitoring. After only 3 months the Centre was inspected by Ofsted and received a Good outcome.

Previously Julia managed two large (90+) day nurseries and was successful at implementing new staffing structures that improved the quality of provision and supported the professional development of the staff. She was also part of a small team of trainers who helped ensure nursery staff were up to speed with the EYFS changes in 2012. She was the Safeguarding lead for both settings.

Prior to that, Julia worked for Cambridgeshire Local Authority as a Childcare and Playwork advisor.  Here she provided support, guidance and challenge to up to 40 settings.  This was through face to face support and the design and delivery of training. She helped deliver training about the 2008 changes to Ofsted registration and requirements. Promoted to team leader, she was responsible for a team of staff, initiating and leading the process of intensive support for failing settings, helping to ensure significant improvements in quality. She was part of a team auditing and planning improvements for settings eligible to join the government’s pilot project for NEG funding for vulnerable two-year olds.

Julia’s early career saw her working as the Deputy Playscheme Co-ordinator, helping to ensure the smooth running of a 150 place holiday Playscheme, for children aged 5-14, run over two separate sites.  Prior to that she managed high quality, Ofsted registered crèche provision for the SureStart Cambridge program.  She was successful in significantly raising parental confidence in the service as well as considerably increasing the number of crèche sessions provided.

Julia’s early experience of childcare was working as a nanny for private families. Here she worked mostly “sole charge” with children from 6 weeks to 11 years (including twins, special needs and children with English as an additional language). She also supported the running of a number of parent and toddler groups.
