Heuristic/Sensory Toys and Treasure Baskets provide a wealth of open ended and tactile based learning, stimulating babies and toddler’s development in a way shop brought, often plastic, toys are just not able to do. They engage all five senses: touch, sight, sound, smell and taste, providing a rich and engaging learning experience. Many babies and toddlers will sit and focus with sensory resources for extended periods of time.

 

Treasure Baskets come in to their own, from around 4 months (once baby has gained head control), but the items can be used from younger, and they come into their own once a child can sit unaided. My toddler still plays with hers!

The first sensory toys are suitable from around 8 weeks when babies start to become more aware of the world around them.  Initially helping to support babies visual development, as they get older the small size and tactile nature of the toys goes on to support their physical development as well.
