The three ‘Characteristics of Effective Learning’ (CoEL) - Engagement, Motivation, and Thinking are the building blocks for learning and are central to planning. They also link directly to ‘Cultural Capital’ and ensuring awe and wonder in children’s learning.

• explore and unpick each of the CoEL in turn to enable you to really understand them

• look at how you embed the CoEL in to your day-to-day practice to motivate and support children’s on-going learning

• consider whether you should restrict it

• explore why certain children are drawn to it

• look at how it can be harnessed to benefit all areas of learning and development.

• explore overcoming barriers to allowing it to take place in your setting

In today’s risk-averse society children are having fewer opportunities to challenge their abilities with age-appropriate risky play. This has an impact, not only on their enjoyment but also on their learning and future ability to manage a world with risk and challenges. While many early years practitioners know this, they are wary of introducing more risky play into their setting.

This training will:

• look at what we mean by the term risky play

• unpick the long-term benefits to children taking part in activities that challenge them

• consider ways settings can feel more confident to provide these kinds of experiences

• look at the idea of risk / benefit analyses

Do you sometimes struggle to assess and show progress for children with additional needs? Is it sometimes hard to plan achievable next steps? This training will take a look at the 'Steps' approach to break down the Early Years foundation stage into more manageable chunks, enabling those with additional needs, or those simply struggling to make progress in a certain area, to progress.

• explore the principles of 'Steps'

• consider how to use 'Steps' to support children's learning

Between the ages of birth to five children’s brains develop at a quicker rate than at any other point of their lives. Children develop fundamental skills that will last them a lifetime. Would you like to understand how children learn and the effects of adult interactions on brain development?

This training will:

• explore the amazing potential of young children to learn

• look at how children’s brains develop

• explore schematic learning

• unpick the importance of the environment provided and the adults within it

We know that boys tend to do less well at all stages of their education – from early years through to GCSE. This session looks at some of the reasons for this and how we can help our boys in the Early Years to do just as well as our girls. By the end of the session you will be better placed to meet the needs of the boys in your setting.

• look at brain development and how boys' brains develop differently to girls'

• consider the areas of learning boys tend to struggle in and unpick why this might be

• explore how boys like to learn and how unconscious bias might be restricting the progress they make

• consider boys' emotional needs

There has, for a number of years, been a focus on helping to narrow the attainment gap for the most deprived children. In more recent years, there has started to be a focus on the health of children and their lack of physical activity. More recently, research is starting to uncover the impact of sedentary lifestyles on children’s educational attainment and adult life chances.  This course will look at this current research and explore how you can support children to become physically literate.

• look at current research into the importance of physical development

• consider the idea of physical literacy

• unpick why physical literacy is particularly important for the most disadvantaged children 

• look at practical ways you can use physical literacy to support all areas of learning

The current Ofsted handbook focuses on the idea of Intent, Implementation and Impact when looking at a setting's curriculum and support for children's learning. In this session we look at how each of these three areas link together to support children's progress, enabling you to be confident you are providing an outstanding learning environment.
